Cannon Falls has an older core than its size suggests. The housing along the river and up the hill from downtown Mill Street runs from the 1880s to the 1920s, and the garages that go with it are usually detached, unheated, and on slabs poured decades after the house. Century-old concrete is worth reading before it is quoted: it is often thinner than modern concrete, was frequently poured without a vapor barrier, and has generally been painted at least once along the way. Behind that core is ordinary mid-century housing, and the newer building on the east side toward US-52 has modern slabs that grind clean. Outside the city limits the work changes shape entirely, because this is farm country and the detached shop or pole building is normal: a bigger floor, heavier equipment, oil and fuel, often no heat.
