Mahtomedi is a resort town that became a suburb, and the concrete carries both histories. Through the Old Village and Wildwood and along the east shore, houses began as summer cottages between the 1900s and the 1930s and were winterized later, so the garage is often detached, unheated, and standing on a slab poured decades after the house it serves. Those slabs vary more than anything else we work on, because there was no single era or standard behind them. Behind that band, the 1950s through 1970s ring is conventional suburban housing with attached two-car garages that grind and coat predictably, and the newer building on the east side toward Highway 244 has modern slabs. Two things tie the lake side of town together: the water table, which is high within a few blocks of White Bear Lake and makes a moisture test worth doing before any lower-level floor is quoted, and the tree cover, which keeps outdoor slabs damp and is why anti-slip aggregate goes on nearly every patio and step here.
