Surface Prep & Repair · Star Prairie, WI · Est. 2003
Star Prairie is a St. Croix County village of about 700 on the Apple River, five miles north of New Richmond on Highway 65. It sits on the line between the Town of Star Prairie and the Town of Stanton, and a stream called Saratoga Spring joins the river in the middle of the village. About 50 minutes north of River Falls. We install polyurea + polyaspartic floor coatings for Star Prairie homeowners: diamond-ground prep, custom flake colors, 1–2 day install, written 15-year warranty. A small older village core, a mid-century through 1990s layer around it, newer houses on the edges, and farm country in every direction where the shop or the pole barn holds more concrete than the house does.
Surface Prep & Repair in Star Prairie
Star Prairie is small and its concrete is straightforward, with two local wrinkles worth knowing. The first is water. The springs here run cold and never stop, which is why the trout farm on the Apple River has raised fish on this spot for a century and a half, and it also means the ground near the river holds moisture all year. A basement or a walkout on that low ground gets a moisture test before a coating goes on it. The second is grit. Most of the roads through the Town of Star Prairie and the Town of Stanton are gravel, so what lands on a garage floor here is sand and crushed rock rather than the road salt that chews on a slab in town. Sand scours bare concrete and dulls floor paint; a polyurea coating takes it without cutting through. Outside the village the building with the largest floor is usually a pole barn or a machine shed.
Star Prairie prep is old floor paint on the village stock, freeze-thaw scaling and door-line spalling, and a moisture answer on anything near the river. We diamond grind to bare concrete, fill cracks with polyurea and rebuild spalled edges.
Why we don't install epoxy in Star Prairie
Surface prep is where cheap coating installs get cheap. Acid etching takes 30 minutes with a $40 jug of muriatic acid; diamond grinding takes hours with $30,000 worth of equipment. The cost difference is why some installers acid etch, and the bond difference is why those floors peel. Here's the head-to-head:
If a coating contractor offers to "save you money on prep" by acid-etching, that's the moment to walk away. The prep is the foundation of the install; saving 30 minutes on prep guarantees a re-install in 18 months. Diamond grinding is the only surface prep we do, and it's included in every coating price.
Star Prairie Pricing
For a coating install, prep is included in the per-sq-ft coating price: never a separate line item, never an upsell. For standalone prep work (sub-contracting to another coating contractor or repair-only jobs), pricing depends on slab condition + scope.

Standalone prep is typically a contractor-to-contractor arrangement, but homeowners with damaged slabs sometimes commission repair-only work as a stopgap before a future coating install. Send photos + scope and Dave will quote.
The 6-step install
Same checklist on every floor. The reason our coatings still look new at year ten when the cheap stuff peeled in year two.
